Trying to install Angular 2 Material from npm - unrecognized token in source text

I try the following command from PowerShell (as Administrator)

npm install @angular2-material


and get the error:

Unrecognized token in source text.
At line:1 char:13
+ npm install <<<< @angular2-material
+ CategoryInfo : ParserError: ) [], ParentContainsErrorRecordException
+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : UnrecognizedToken


I've even tried getting just a single A2M component (core) and get the same error:

npm install @angular2-material/{core}


Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
npm: 3.9.5
node: 6.2.2
OS: Win7
