I understand that synchronous functions block code execution until they finish running, while asynchronous functions allow other code to run during waiting periods. However, I'm still unsure about when it's best to use one over the other—for example, in real-world situations like API calls or user interface updates. Could someone provide examples or guidelines?

So far, I’ve tried experimenting with both synchronous and asynchronous code in small JavaScript functions. For example, I used a for loop to simulate synchronous code and setTimeout or fetch() with async/await for asynchronous operations.

I expected that using asynchronous functions would just “speed things up,” but I ran into confusion when my code didn’t run in the order I expected. Sometimes it seems like the asynchronous parts are skipped or delayed, and I’m not sure how to control the flow of the program.

I was hoping to see clear behavior that shows when to use async functions and how they behave compared to sync ones, but instead, I’m getting unexpected output—especially when mixing both in the same program.
