I want to simulate a system (not a game) that operates at human speeds, that is, about the speed at which a person can hunt-and-peck on a keyboard. Basically, redrawing a background image and a relatively small number of lines may once or twice per second. My initial inclination is to use pygame because it has the infrastructure I need like events, for both keyboard and mouse, and a drawing package for colors, shapes, lines, and text. My question is whether pygame is an appropriate choice or is there something better. I've ruled out Matplotlib animation because I'm not really plotting anything on a grid. I also find it difficult laying out things using pixels rather than grid coordinates. I've considered Qt but the problem there is I'm just not familiar enough with its rather large API.

    Any suggestions?
