[Python] \t generating too many whitespaces in python [duplicate]

I am working in python. When I add the \t command I expect to see 4 spaces in my output, but I always see 8 spaces.

I am using the Geany text editor. I checked the preferences for the editor and it says the indentation is set to 4 spaces.
