[Python] How to determine race course, turns, and lap count from high-frequency GPS...

Senior SWE interview today at a FAANG like, failed this Q The problem statement as I remember it was: Suppose that you have gps sensor in a racecar. The sensor is taking a 'snapshot' of Lat/Long every couple 100th of a second. How would you programmatically determine a) the race course b) the turns in the course and c) how many laps the car preformed.

I feel like it not a very hard problem, but I got flustered and just couldnt get my brain to get started, but I feel like there is a clear and obvious solution

I thought about making GPS buckets because there would be so many small points, a lot of noise would be generated as the car raced, however I could not get a working solution in the time available to me
