[Python] Best method to find and measure width of small black band in the middle...

Trying to detect and draw the 2 vertical lines (red), and the measure the width (yellow lines). Right now I start at the left outermost and move inwards to detect where the black/white border is (after I create a binary image). Then I do the same method for the right. However, due to the image variability in contrast it's difficult to detect in this manner since I'm relying on the threshold of creating a binary image. Any logic ideas are welcome - no code needed just working on thought process. Once I detect the red lines it's easy to determine the width (which should be the thinnest spot of the band). I am using opencv with python.
