ng-idle package not working in production - why?

@ng-idle/core idle feature works in the development build on the server but not in the prod build on the server, the only difference is one is built using ng build vs ng build --prod

This method below never gets triggered.

setupKeepalive() {
this.keepalive.interval(15);
this.keepalive.onPing.subscribe(() => {
this.lastPing = new Date();
console.log("AppComponent ~ this.lastPing:", this.lastPing)
});}


any ideas?
